ROSE HILL, Va. — Max Chance, age 84, died at home Tuesday morning. He was born in the Flatwoods community on May 25, 1928, the son of Charles and Dollie Beatrice Kyle Chance. He loved Lee County, Va. and had many close friends and family there; and his heart always belonged to Lee County.

He attended and was a lifelong member of the Flatwoods Methodist Church. He was an army veteran and served during the Korean War. Max graduated from Flatwoods High School and enjoyed attending his high school reunions each year. He received a bachelor’s degree from Lincoln Memorial Universityand a Master’s degree from Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana.

Max worked for several years in the engineering department for Avco Corporation at Cape Canaveral, Florida where he worked on sending NASA’s first rockets into space.

He taught high school and coached cross-country and basketball in Indiana at Hamilton Southeastern before moving his family to Lee County where he taught at Flatwoods High School. One of his greatest joys was coaching men’s varsity basketball, baseball and cross-country. But an even greater passion was knowing and working with the individuals that played on these teams.

He took a personal interest in his players and considered many to be like family. He ended his teaching career at Lee High School. Max retired from teaching and coaching and spent time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He loved traveling and visiting friends and family in his little red mini-cooper. Max lived life to the fullest and enjoyed his many conversations with his friends.

He was very proud of his daughters, Susan and Debbie, and especially his grandchildren. Max will be deeply missed and always loved by his family.

Survivors include his two daughters, Susan Chance Chipouras and husband, Jim of Charlotte, N.C. and Debbie Chance of Morristown, Tn. four grandchildren, John and Steven Chipouras, Katie and Sarah Branham; and many dear friends, loving nieces and nephews and family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Beaty Chance and his parents, Charles and Dollie Chance. Three brothers, Jack, Robert and Pete, one infant sister, Margaret, and one nephew Petie Chance.

Visitation will be at Province Funeral Home beginning at 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, May 24 with the funeral following at 7:00 p.m., Friday with Rev. Greg Cartwright officiating.

The graveside service will be held at 11:00am Saturday, May 25 in the Chance-Edds Cemetery in Chance ‘s Chapel. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:45am Saturday for the service.
