Signs of the Christmas holiday are everywhere throughout downtown Middlesboro including Santa’s new home on Fountain Square, the city Christmas tree and over 50 entries preparing for the annual Christmas Parade.

Discover Downtown Middlesboro volunteers have organized decorations to give the downtown a festive look and feel.

“We are happy to invite people downtown this time of year to enjoy a one-of-a-kind community celebration,” said Keith Nagle, President of Discover Downtown Middlesboro.

The city Christmas tree lighting will take place today at 6 p.m. in Fountain Square, but in case of rain it will be located at Santa’s House at 1927 Cumberland Ave. Featured at the event will be state Sen. Brandon Smith, local singer Jade Robertson, Middlesboro Elementary School Principal Dr. Tony Maxwell, several area choirs, churches and the Cumberland Mountain Fall Festival Queen Brooke Gibbs.

Saturday’s Old Fashioned Christmas Parade will begin at 3 p.m. Citizens are encouraged to line the parade route along Cumberland Ave. between 15 and 21 Street but bleachers will be located at Fountain Square and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Mack Yoacum has donated space for Santa’s House at 1927 Cumberland Ave. This space is for children and families to visit with Santa Claus from immediately after the parade on Saturday and again on Dec. 13, 14, 20 and 21 beginning at 5pm each night.

Continuing last year’s tradition, faculty and students from Lincoln Memorial University and the Middlesboro High School Key Club have also painted holiday scenes on storefront windows.

Assisting in DDM’s fundraising efforts is the Fund for the Arts based in Louisville and their Power2Give website. For Every dollar that local people donate on the website an additional dollar donation will be matched by LG&E and KU Energy.

“We encourage folks to make a donation today to make this Christmas a special one for everyone involved,” said Donna Smith, the organization committee chair.
