The Harrogate Volunteer Fire Department, in conjunction with Martha Scheidler from Lincoln Memorial University, has applied for several grants designed to improve safety for people in the area.
A fire prevention safety grant from State Farm Insurance will allow the fire department to purchase a trailer valued at $45,000.
This trailer will be used for educational purposes and can be towed to schools in Claiborne County to teach children how to safely escape a house fire.
The trailer will also be taken to city functions such as the annual Harrogate Labor Day picnic for display and education of citizens.
Schiedler also assisted the city of Harrogate with applying for three separate grants from FEMA to provide new equipment and a training simulator.
The regional grant would provide the city with a firefighter training simulator which contains a maze inside for firefighters to enter and search as if they were actually in a house fire. There are 62 ways for this trailer to be arranged and includes a real fire to be extinguished. The grant is for $177,000.
The second FEMA grant would provide $82,000 to be spent on training sessions and miscellaneous equipment.
The final FEMA grant would provide a new pumper truck and tanker truck totaling $445,000. It would allow the department to better access and extinguish smaller house fires.
The Insurance Service Organization recently lowered the fire insurance rate for Claiborne County by 28 percent.
If the city is awarded the grants and the new equipment, the possibility exists for an even lower rating for fire insurance for Claiborne County citizens.
