When their outside shots are falling the Bell County Lady Cats can put a game away in a hurry. That was the case on Friday as the Lady Cats hit 11 three-pointers and built a 70-36 lead before cruising to a 79-57 win over South Laurel.
Sophomore guard Katrina Johnson went 5-of-6 from the field (all from 3-point range) on her way to a 20-point night. Junior Maci Morris finished with 26 points and ten rebounds while Jess Sanders added 12 points in the win.
South Laurel was led by juniors Brittany Vandeventer and Morgan Madden, who scored 16 and 15 points, respectively.
The Lady Cats took control early as Morris hit two 3s and scored 12 of her points in the first quarter. Johnson added five points while senior Morgan Garnett converted a three-point play and Kelli Smith also scored three points in the period as Bell County led 23-9 after one.
It was more of the same in the second period with Morris pouring in ten points and Johnson converting a four-point play. Sanders also scored four points and Allison Howard added a basket off the bench.
Madden put in ten of her points in the first half and Vandeventer added seven while Preslie Baker and Bailey Miller hit 3s for the Lady Cardinals. By halftime the Lady Cat lead was 45-23.
Sanders had the hot hand for Bell County in the third quarter, hitting a pair of 3s and another basket for eight points. Johnson also hit two from long range, Garnett and Sarah Collins also connected from beyond the arc and Morris chipped in with four points as the lead ballooned to 70-36 going into the fourth quarter.
Vandeventer scored nine of her points in the final period and Madden added five, but it was too little too late as the Lady Cats coasted to the 22-point win.
District games are up next for both teams with Bell County (12-3) hosting Middlesboro on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. while South Laurel (4-12) was scheduled to play at Williamsburg on Monday.
