A main topic of discussion at the Middlesboro School Board was the approval of the school calendar for 2014-2015.
The calendar will be available at the main office as well as on the district’s website at www.mboro.k12.ky.us.
Jeff Greene was elected as the new chairman of the board.
Kenny Pratt was elected vice chairman.
Under direction of Dr. Tony Maxwell, the board approved allowing Middlesboro Elementary School to reapply for the Read to Achieve grant for the eighth year.
This grant — for the 2014-2015 school year — will allow funding for teachers in the school to provide small group time and one-on-one instruction for children who are struggling with reading.
Middlesboro High School student council raised money and contributions from Home Federal Bank allowed for the purchase of a new yellow jacket mascot. The students at the high school will be polled to name the mascot. It will be released later in the month.
The board reviewed the draft budget for the upcoming fiscal year.
“It is lengthy, but we are on schedule to meet our state contingency,” said Superintendent Steve Martin.
Adjustments will be made to the budget in upcoming meetings before it is approved.
