The Bell County Volunteer Fire Department (BCVFD) unanimously voted to reopen the Arjay fire station during the regular meeting on Tuesday.
Board members stated the truck is insured and will be back at the station on Friday. The board plans to have a celebration of the opening at 1 p.m. on March 22.
In conjunction with the action, Adron Wilson was voted and sworn in as the captain of the Arjay station until elections are held.
Bucky Shelby offered an apology to the public on behalf of the fire department during the meeting as well.
“This fire department wants to openly apologize to everyone that has been mistreated or spoken out against from some of the previous administration,” said Shelby, who is one member of the new BCVFD Board of Directors. “We cannot apologize enough for that.”
Shelby said the BCVFD exists for the betterment of Bell County and its citizens.
“It’s an honor for us to be able to serve the citizens of Bell County,” said Shelby. “This is your fire department. This is not our fire department, this is Bell County’s Fire Department.”
Shelby asked the residents to help the BCVFD move forward and to forget the past.
“Let’s band together as a community and volunteers and take ownership of this Bell County Volunteer Fire Department, push it and help it grow to be the best,” said Shelby. “That’s what you deserve.”
Shelby also commented on the financial state of the BCVFD.
“We (the new BCVFD Board of Directors) inherited a fire department that was virtually drained,” said Shelby. “It’s going to take our help along with the communities’ help to get this fire department back to where it needs to be.”
The board is negotiating with Bell Fiscal Court for a new contract. They also have plans to meet with Red Bird Fire Department and chief to discuss a mutual aid agreement.
The board discussed possibly doing something similar with the Frakes Fire Department.
“I feel like this board we’ve got is going in the right direction,” said Shelby.
The BCVFD board meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. Meetings are open to the public.
Trainings are each Tuesday & Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Call 606-337-8080 to contact the BCVFD.
