Rebecca Lee-Theis fired a five-inning one-hitter and the Pineville Lady Lions put up six runs in the second inning as they rolled to a 10-0 win over defending 51st District champion Knox Central on Wednesday.
“Last year we battled with Knox Central and they beat us in the district championship game 1-0. Our girls wanted to make sure to take care of this game and they didn’t want it to be close. Their goal was to win it in five and that’s what they came out here and did,” Lady Lions coach Shari Knuckles said.
Lee-Theis struck out nine and didn’t walk a batter in the game.
“She’s stepped up on the mound and every time out she comes in with confidence and is ready to take over the game,” Knuckles added. “She only gave up on hit and no walks. With a pitcher like that you just come in a back her up with the offense.”
Emily Mullins led off the bottom of the first inning with a bunt single. She advanced to second on Erica Gambrell’s ground out and scored on a two-out single by Rebekah Hoskins. It should have been the third out, but the pop up fell in behind the Lady Panther second baseman as Mullins scored from second for a 1-0 Lady Lion lead.
Sarah Swafford led off the top of the second with a clean single through the right side for the only Knox Central hit of the game. Lee-Theis struck out the next two batters and Kameron Jackson caught a fly ball to left to end the inning.
Brooke Sanders opened the bottom of the inning by belting a double to the fence in left-center. Jackson walked and, one out later, Kelsey Goodin sent a shot over the left fielder’s head for a two-run double.
“Brooke stepped up and hit one all the way to the fence and then Kelsey, she’s a senior, also got a double with runners on to spark that big inning for us,” Knuckles added.
Mullins, Gamrbell and Hoskins would add hits in the inning while Lizzie Lee-Theis was hit by a pitch and Rebecca Lee-Theis reached on an error as Pineville scored six times to take a 7-0 lead.
Pineville put the game away with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Lizzie Lee-Theis walked and Hoskins singled to put runners at the corners. Rebecca Lee-Theis had an RBI ground out and Sanders singled in a run. Jackson walked again and Brandy Sanders brought Brooke Sanders in with an RBI ground out to make it 10-0 and that proved to be the final.
Rebecca Lee-Theis got two comebackers for the first two outs of the fifth inning an then closed the game with a strikeout.
Both teams return to action on Thursday with Knox Central (4-12, 1-2) hosting Harlan County and Pineville (5-3, 1-0) hosting Barbourville.
