Dr. Seuss’ birthday has been celebrated throughout Bell County for the past few weeks and the culminating event is happening Saturday at Middlesboro Mall.
The Happy Birthday - Dr. Seuss Event at the mall is taking place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is free to the public.
The event begins with a Dr. Seuss classic — Green Eggs and Ham. From 9 a.m. to noon., Lazy Joe’s will be serving green eggs, ham, hash browns and toast for $5.
After breakfast, children can have their picture made with the various Dr. Seuss characters in attendance all day. Children are encouraged to come in costume to be a part of the costume contest and parade.
The mall will have exhibitors set up throughout the mall promoting literacy. Entertainment and guest speakers will also be provided throughout the day.
The Middlesboro Daily News will be in attendance as well. Stop by our booth to subscribe to your hometown paper and promote literacy in your family.
All week, workers have prepared for the big event. Mall management donated space in a vacant store to be set as a staging area. Volunteers have been working around the clock to make this year’s event as successful as last year.
Store windows have been transformed into works of art portraying various characters from Dr. Seuss’ many children’s books. A display of favorite Seuss classics appear in Bookland’s window and the Incredible Chocolate Cookie Company is featuring Dr. Seuss themed desserts in their display case.
The event is sponsored by the Children’s Reading Foundation of Appalachia-KY — a nonprofit group dedicated to promoting literacy among children.
Research shows that reading with children just 20 minutes a day helps them become better readers and that better readers are more likely to stay in school and to succeed later in life. The foundation works hard to spread the reading foundation message through newspapers, radio and other media and through special events and community partnerships.
Children’s Reading Foundation of Appalachia-KY also promotes reading by collecting new and gently used children’s books and distributing them to families who need them.
