Local students take home honors in National History Day contest

Judges at this year’s National History Day competition, held recently on the Cumberland campus of SKCTC, took in the exhibits before tallying up their scores.


Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College, along with the Kentucky Historical Society, recently hosted the National History Day Kentucky Region 7 competition on the Cumberland campus.

The event, held March 24, allowed students from Bell and Pike counties to present exhibits, documentaries, websites, performances and papers on topics relating to this year’s theme, “Taking a Stand in History.”

Each student or group presented their project to a panel of judges who determined which projects would qualify for the statewide contest.

Region 7 winners included:

Senior group exhibit:Caleigh Taylor and Korrissa Varney, A Mother’s Love – Mamie Till, Pike County Central High School, Pike County; Harper Williams and Carly Hall, They Don’t Own Us – 1973 Harlan County Coal Strike, Pike County Central High School, Pike County; Cory May, Jacob Adkins, Seth Conn and Jayden Wesley, America’s Upset Stomach “The Jungle” by Upton Sinclair, Pike County Central High School, Pike County; Bethany Allen and Miah Elswick, Stowe: Little Lady…Big War, Pike County Central High School, Pike County.

Junior group exhibit:Abby Cornett, Brant Hoskins, Raegan Robbins, Clara Barton: Angel of the Battlefield, Bell Central School Center, Bell County; Emily Smith, Julia Branham, Ashley Hurst, Kaylee Lay, Kayleigh Saylor, Susan B. Anthony: Fights for Equal Rights, Bell Central School Center, Bell County; Gracie Gray and Madison Ramey, Grace Wilder, Claudette Colvin: The Unknown Hero, Bell Central School Center, Bell County; Hayden Clark, Alex Mays and Laurel Nolan, Jackie Robinson: The Player that Changed Baseball and America, Bell Central School Center., Bell County.

Junior group website: Kolton Johnson, Annie Jones, Shawn Asher and Madisyn Barnett, Harriet Tubman, Bell Central School Center, Bell County.

Senior group website: Cody Conn, Zack Williams, Ethan Justice and Austin Adkins, Al Capone, Pike County Central High School, Pike County.

Junior group performance: Bub Treece, Dalton Lawson, Ethan Smith, Caleb York and Conner McGeorge, The Boston Tea Party: Taking a Stand Against Unfair Taxation, Bell Central School Center, Bell County.

Junior group documentary: Andrew Gambrel, Brandon Baker, Caden Phipps and Jonathan Weaver; Sons of Liberty: Massacre in Boston, Bell Central School Center, Bell County.

Senior paper: Kayla Smith, Starvation for Representation, Bell County High School, Bell County; Alyssa Hillman, Digging out the Truth: Muckrakers and Their Unveilings, Bell County High School, Bell County.
