BIG STONE GAP, Va. — The Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park will host its First Saturday Community Coffee House from 7-9 p.m. Sept. 5. Wayne Mefford will serve as the featured host.
Wayne Mefford, of Wise, Virginia, has been a musician for over 45 years. Mefford’s roots come from a gospel music format, which paved the way for many other genres of music to become a part of his musical life. From playing the piano in church to pickin’ the bass on some blues, Wayne has played with many well-known musicians in area communities.
Mefford has developed and organized the “Pickin Porch” and several other blues jams for festivals and functions. Whether it is running sound, playing guitar, playing bass and every once in a while singing a song, he is happy being a part of the music. He shares his love of music with four generations of his family and holds this tradition very close to his heart.
The First Saturday Community Coffee House is an open-mic event and is open to all family-friendly performers. All interested musicians, storytellers and poets should arrive by 6:30 p.m. for sign-up and scheduling. Admission is free to this program. Refreshments will be available for purchase.
