Kalia named Student Doctor of the Year

HARROGATE, Tenn. — Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (LMU-DCOM) student Ricky Kalia, of Cincinnati, Ohio, has been selected as Student Doctor of the Year (SDOY) for LMU-DCOM. Kalia is a third-year osteopathic medical student.

SDOY is a program of the Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents (COSGP). The primary focus of the award is to acknowledge students’ commitment to their school, their community and the osteopathic profession.

Kalia was elected class president during his second year of medical school and re-elected class president during his third year and for his incoming fourth year. He has performed numerous health screening and awareness activities for the residents of Harrogate, Tenn., as well led clean-up activities in abandoned areas of Middlesboro. Kalia also tutored fellow students in physiology, gross anatomy and neuroanatomy and served as an ambassador, frequently giving tours to prospective medical students on their interview day.

He has also been an active voice on the regional and national level to promote the osteopathic profession. Regionally, Kalia participated in the Tennessee Osteopathic Medical Association (TOMA) state conference and attended TOMA meeting as a student representative. Nationally, he was a member of the COSGP and served as the National Global Health Representative from May 2014 through April 2015. He was also the national director of Omega Beta Iota: National Osteopathic Politician Action Honor Society.

Kalia was instrumental in organizing a medical outreach trip to Tanzania. As the founder of the LMU-DCOM chapter of DOCARE he served as a volunteer on a medical outreach trip to Nicaragua. He also was a volunteer on medical outreach trips to the Dominican Republic and Haiti, and traveled to London, England to attend the Osteopathic International Alliance Conference.

Kalia received his undergraduate degree in molecular genetics from The Ohio State University. While attending LMU-DCOM he is simultaneously working on his master’s degree in business administration. He is the son of Brij and Veena Kalia.
