The first day of school is just around the corner, so children and parents are getting ready as summer vacation comes to an end.
There are many expenses involved in getting students back in the classroom. Belk and Cooperative Christian Ministry would like to help.
Belk is asking the community for back to school donations. Basic school supplies can be brought to Belk in the Middlesboro Mall anytime between now and Aug. 1. In turn, anyone donating will be registered for a drawing to receive gift baskets from Belk’s cosmetic department — which will include full size perfumes or cologne.
Every year in August, Belk hosts Kids Fest. Local children model Belk clothing while snacks and refreshments are served. This is the first time they will hold a school supply drive. This year’s event will be on Aug. 1, and shall include the drawing. Winners will not need to be present to receive prizes.
“Since Kids Fest is so close to the school year starting — we decided to do this drop off zone,” said Belk associate Chrystal Thomas. “There is such a need for these supplies and parents have to buy so much. They can be very expensive so we wanted to help with that.”
Anyone who wishes to donate school supplies are asked to bring them to Belk during regular business hours from now until Aug. 1. All donated items will be given to CCM for distribution to the public.
“We thought this was a great idea,” said Ashley Witt from CCM. “We do a charity event each year with Belk, and when Chrystal Thomas called we were happy to participate with this.”
