UPDATE: Trooper in stable condition after pursuit

Kentucky State Police Post 10 is reporting that Trooper Josh Messer sustained a non life-threatening injury during a foot pursuit Sunday night in Bell County.

According to the release, Troopers George Howard and Messer were conducting a traffic safety checkpoint on KY 72 at Blackmont around 7:35 p.m. when a 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck attempted to strike troopers and continued east on KY 72. The truck then swerved off of KY 72 onto an old railroad bed and fled into a wooded area. As Messer was pursuing the suspect, he sustained a non life-threatening injury.

Police said Messer was airlifted to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, Knoxville, Tennessee. Messer is in stable condition.

The search for the occupants of the vehicle continued throughout the night.

Howard is in charge of the investigation. He was assisted by several troopers from Post 10, the Bell County Sheriff’s Department and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer Landry Collett.
