Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Nobody knows this better than Jackie Kile and Tim Powers, owners of K-Treats.
Kile and Powers vacationed in the eastern Tennessee area several times in the past. Last year, they uprooted and moved from Colorado to Caryville, Tennessee to start baking.
“We loved Tennessee so much that we came here to retire and started in a doughnut shop. People from Middlesboro loved our doughnuts, so we decided to open one up in the mall with a more central location,” said Kile.
Kile found that life in the south can be slower, but southerners love doughnuts — and the doughnut business can mean early hours.
“We were tired of the the corporate world and tired of the snow in Denver. We’ve worked in the corporate world for 20-30 years and we just wanted a slower paced life,” said Kile.
Kile and Powers said they are still adjusting to 4 a.m. baking, but the smile on a customer’s face makes it worth the work. From blueberry cream-filled doughnuts to caramel and chocolate swirled Snickers doughnuts, K-Treats offers something for everyone.
“We get so many compliments on our doughnuts because we do so much different stuff. Most doughnuts have a hole in the middle, but our’s are filled with Oreo or Snickers or fruit and it’s something new and interesting for people to try,” said Kile.
K-Treats also serves traditional breakfast items such as toast and sausage gravy along with more modern bites like a breakfast version of pigs in a blanket — with sausage links in a pancake wrap. Lunch options range from juicy cheeseburgers and chicken quesadillas to fresh salads with a chicken or ham topping.
K-Treats is located in the Middlesboro Mall near the movie theater. They are open from 9 a.m until 7 p.m.
