One of the hardest industries to land a position in is the movie or film industry; however, Middlesboro native Lee Majors is one of the lucky ones that made it onto the silver screen.
Majors, born Harvey Lee Yeary, was a football player at Eastern Kentucky University who was also studying history and physical education. He was dared by teammates to try out for the lead role in The Crucible in 1961. He surprised himself and teammates when he found out he was chosen to play the part.
“There was a dramatic moment during that first play and I knew then,” said Majors. “I was down on one knee and there were tears running down their cheek in the audience. I thought to myself right there that I could do this.”
In 1963, he played the part of Joan Crawford’s husband in Strait-Jacket. He remembers coming back to Middlesboro and seeing his name on the theater.
“The marquee had my name bigger at the top and Joan’s was below mine, smaller. Since I was a hometown boy, it was nice to see a big turnout for that,” said Majors.
Majors is a Middlesboro High School graduate from the class of 1957. Although he has ‘made it big’, he has a fondness for Small Town America, walking to football practice after school and the place where he has his roots.
“I love the little town and I grew up there. That kind of instilled in me the country background so I know how that is and I think I could live there again with the simplicities,” said Majors.
Some of Majors’ hobbies include golf and hunting, but he mostly enjoys fishing now. He is currently writing a book and is living in Los Angeles, California, with his wife Faith.
Majors is now portraying a role in Ash Versus Evil Dead on STARZ.
“I get killed off quite often, but they keep bringing me back so I guess I die well,” laughed Majors.
He will be making an appearance at the ComicCon in Lexington from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on March 11 and 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. on March 12. More information can be found at www.lexingtoncomiccon.com.
