Discover Downtown Middlesboro had a busy weekend providing a family fun oriented day in Downtown Middlesboro on Saturday.

The day started off with a new event, The Wing Fling, and was followed by the annual Ducky Dash and new Levitt AMP Concert series featuring Jenna and Her Cool Friends.

According to DDM Vice-President Stephen Cambron, organizers are pleased with both the participation and turnout at the events.

“We are extremely pleased with how the events turned out this past weekend,” said Cambron. “With it being our first go-around with a food competition, we didn’t know what to expect.”

Cambron went on to say the majority of the 500 pounds of chicken wings cooked were gone before the competition was over.

“All we could hope was for the people of Middlesboro to come support the teams who put in a lot of work to make it happen, and that’s exactly what they did,” said Cambron. “With over 500 lbs. of chicken wings cooked throughout the day, most of the teams ran out right at the end.”

The winning teams were, Fan Favorite, “Just Wing It’, Middlesboro Nursing & Rehab, Grand Prize Winners, 1st Place, $500 winner,”Just Wing It”, Middlesboro Nursing & Rehab, and 2nd Place, $200 winner- Food City.

Cambron says the participation and interest level of the new event makes DDM optimistic for what the future holds. In the years to come, DDM hopes to increase the amount of teams in the event, as well as having different types of cook offs.

Overall, DDM is just happy to see the downtown streets filled with people enjoying themselves and they credit that to the sponsors and volunteers who helped make the event possible. Cambon also credits the Middlesboro Police Department and city workers for their long hours at the day’s events.

“They were the first on the scene at 7 a.m. and the last to leave after 9 p.m.,” said Cambron.

After the Wing Fling was the annual Ducky Dash held in the canal next to the city parking lot. Emily O’Boyle took home first place honors and $250 as her duck crossed the finish line ahead of over 300 others.

The first concert of the 10 week concert series had a big turnout as well. Jenna and Her Cool Friends put on a show at the new Levitt AMP site in downtown Middlesboro.
