A former Claiborne County School Board member was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and vandalism under $500 on Tuesday afternoon. The arrest resulted from an alleged altercation with a neighbor, Jonathan Matthew Jones, 32, of Tazewell.

Dave William Chesney, 72, also of Tazewell, was lodged in the Claiborne County Justice Center pending his arraignment on Wednesday. Claiborne County General Sessions Judge Robert Estep set Chesney an own recognizance bond of $10,000. Chesney signed the OR bond and was released from jail Wednesday morning.

Chesney is the father of country music star Kenny Chesney.

The incident reportedly took place at approximately 1:24 p.m. on Tournament Drive in the community of the Woodlake Golf Course in Tazewell and officers with the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office reported they arrived on scene at approximately 2:12 p.m.

Claiborne County Sgt. Eddie Hurley was the arresting officer. Hurley was assisted on scene by Claiborne County Deputies Josh Fields and Dewayne Napier.

According to the police report from the CCSO, Chesney allegedly “struck the victim numerous times on the right side of the face using his fist.” The police report goes on to say Chesney also allegedly struck “the victim in the left arm with a golf club.”

The report states Chesney was charged with aggravated assault for those offenses.

The report goes on to say Chesney was also charged with vandalism under $500 for allegedly knocking the victim’s sunglasses off his face and stomping on them with his foot.
