A vehicle pursuit ended with a bomb scare Tuesday afternoon and evening.
Traffic was stopped in both directions on Cedar Fork Road for some time Tuesday afternoon, approximately eight miles from the intersection of U.S. Hwy. 25E in Tazewell.
According to David Breeding, Director of Claiborne County Office of Emergency Management Homeland Security (CCOEMHS), officers with the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) were in pursuit of a vehicle.
The CCSO reported in a news release Friday that the pursuit took place after an individual allegedly discharged a firearm in a residence on Standifur Lane in Tazewell.
The suspects, Jeremy Wayne Redden and Virginia May Redden, both of Virginia, then fled the scene the report states.
CCSO officers attempted to stop the vehicle and the Reddens continued to flee, throwing out items during the pursuit, according to the report.
“At one point, officers made contact with Redden’s vehicle when he stopped abruptly before continuing in his attempt to evade authorities,” the release states.
The pursuit ended when Redden stopped on Cedar Fork Road near A.J. Campbell Lane in Tazewell.
When the vehicle was stopped and the suspect was in custody the vehicle was searched, Breeding said.
During that search explosive materials were found, Breeding added. Traffic was blocked while officials waited on the Knox County Bomb Squad. Also responding to the scene were Tennessee Homeland Security, Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP), THP Bomb Squad, ATF, FBI, ATF Bomb & Arson, and TEMA.
The explosive devices were rendered safe and Cedar Fork Road was reopened around 8 p.m.
Jeremy Redden was transported to the Claiborne Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries but remains in custody. He is currently charged with felony evading, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, tempering with evidence, possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, possession of a handgun while under the influence, possession of explosive components and vandalism of county property with possible federal charges pending.
Virginia Redden is being held at Claiborne County Jail on similar charges, according to the CCSO report.
The ATF is continuing the investigation, Breeding said.
