Bell-Whitley Community Action Agency hosted a Health and Community Resource Fair last week.
The event took place at the Middlesboro Mall and was free to the community. They offered a variety of preventive health screenings. Other community resource booths were set up to provide information and answer questions. Door prizes were also given throughout the day to those attending the event.
The BWCAA motto is “Fighting poverty makes us happy happy happy!” Fighting the war on poverty is what they do. This was the second year for the event and the turnout was good.
“This is just a way for us and our partners to offer free health screenings to the community and share information,” said BWCAA Director Sandy Hoskins. “Community action is all about helping people and that is what we are here to do.”
This year they partnered with Middlesboro ARH Hospital, Pineville Community Hospital, Amedisys Hospice Care and many others. These partners were on hand to provide the health screenings and many materials about available services being offered. Each vendor in attendance provided free items and helpful information.
“It is all about prevention,” said Hoskins.”We are checking blood pressure and glucose — things like that. We want to educate the public on nutrition and all the preventive measures that can be taken for good health.”
