Discover Downtown Middlesboro is planning a new annual event that will run alongside the yearly Ducky Dash and the upcoming Levitt Amp Concert Series.
The first annual Wing Fling will be held downtown in the Crater City Commons, located at 2018 Cumberland Avenue, on Aug. 1.
DDM Vice-President Stephen Cambron says the organization decided this new event downtown would be something for everyone.
“Our goal is to bring events downtown for the people of Middlesboro to enjoy,” explained Cambron. “We thought everyone would like a food competition, especially if that food were chicken wings.”
The cost for a team to enter is $175 — $25 will be refunded as a cleanup fee. The $150 allows teams into the contest and DDM provides them with a 10×10 space to cook and 44 pounds of chicken wings used that day. Everything else needs to be brought by the team — tent, grill/fryer, sauce, spices, utensils, etc.
DDM encourages chicken wing enthusiasts to be a part of the event by sampling the wings and voting for their “Fan Favorite”.
“We would like to see the community get behind the various teams and vote for their favorite,” said Cambron. “Let’s see some spirited rivalry and find out who has the best wings in the crater.”
The cost for people to purchase tickets at the event is $5. The price allows the public to try chicken wings from each team/contestant and then vote for their favorite.
The grand prizes will be awarded by a judges panel. The first place wing champion receives a $500 cash prize, followed by $200 for the second place winner and atrophy will be presented for “Fan Favorite.”
The team registration deadline is July 15. Applications are available at Mikel Pharmacy, 1928 Cumberland Avenue.
