More than two weeks have passed since David A. Mason’s body was found by his family.
According to the family, they notified the police that Mason was missing and began looking for him near his home. Mason’s son, Jon Mason Cox, and brother, Derek Cox, found him under a mattress by a creek in a wooded area near his home in the Arjay community of Bell County on June 15.
According to a press release from the Kentucky State Police, they are investigating the death as a murder. Police said in a statement the autopsy results found Mason had died of a gunshot wound.
Now his family and friends are struggling to understand why he is gone.
“He’d give you the shirt off his back,” said Jon. “It’s just the way he was.”
Longtime friend Donna Woolum remembers him as “a well-liked person, good dad and good friend.”
Mason’s mother Mary Cox pleads that anyone who knows anything should call the KSP.
“I want them caught,” said Mary. “Our life is empty now.”
Mary says she is confident the police will find the person responsible for her son’s death.
“We’ve got the best sheriff there could ever be in this county and the best state police,” said Mary. “They won’t get away with it, they will be caught.”
For now, Mary is holding on to the last memory she has of her son. He stopped by to check on her because she had been ill.
“I remember holding him so tight and telling him I love him,” said Mary.
The case remains under investigation by KSP Det. Josh Howard.
