EWING, Va. — General stores are becoming a thing of the past. Montgomery Grocery in Ewing, Va., however, is keeping with tradition and bucking that trend.

Montgomery offers everything from home improvement tools and horse tack to candy bars and chili dogs.

Arvel Montgomery purchased the grocery from Neil Leonard in 1955.

At that time, the shop was more of a country store where the clerk would go back to the storage area and bring out items from the customers shopping list.

In the early 1970’s, owners Bill and Brenda Montgomery remodeled the store adding aisles and a shopping area where the customers could browse items for sale.

Wilson has helped out in her parents store for the past 20 years.

“People are really bargain shopping now, but the people are still the same. They don’t call and ask about the staple items as much — bread and milk — but they will ask about gas or cigarette prices,” said Wilson.

With the significant loss of jobs in the area and coal mines being closed, these are tough economic times for every business in the area.

Wilson attributes Montgomery Grocery’s success to the sense of family and honesty they have to offer customers.

“We practically know everybody that comes in here so you get a friendship with customers. Dad always tries to keep the lowest prices he can to help the people,” said Wilson.

Montgomery Grocery is located at 284 Station Creek Road in Ewing. The store is open Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m and can be reached by calling 276-861-2212.
