HARROGATE, Tenn. — Tickets for the Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) School of Arts and Humanities’ LMU Players production of “Godspell” are now available online at http://alumni.lmunet.edu/GODSPELL.
The musical will run April 11-15. The musical was conceived and originally directed by John Tebelak. The production features music and new lyrics by Stephen Schwartz.
The premier is set for April 11, in the Sam and Sue Mars Performing Arts Center in the Duke Hall of Citizenship on LMU’s main campus in Harrogate, Tenn. The show will run through April 15, with nightly curtain calls set for 8 p.m. each night except for Sunday.
Tickets are $5 and can be reserved in advanced online or purchased at the door. LMU students, faculty and staff are free with their LMU ID.
Marking the second production from the student company, “Godspell” features the talents of over 20 LMU students including a cast of 11 company actors. The Stephen Schwartz musical is produced and designed by Assistant Professor of Theater Stephen E. Haynes and directed by James Harshbarger, with musical direction by Dr. Young Kim, LMU instructor of music.
The musical, which is based on the Gospel of Matthew, features hit songs including “Day by Day,” “Beautiful City,” “All for the Best” and others. “Godspell” premiered Off Broadway in 1971 and was later produced on Broadway. The LMU Players production is based on the 2012 Broadway revival that brought a fresh sound and sensibility to the timeless material. The structure of “Godspell” is different than most musicals as it features the telling of biblical parables in fun, lively ways with incredible music sprinkled throughout.
“Although this musical is a celebration of the teachings of Jesus, everyone regardless of religious affiliation or beliefs will find joy and relevance in the show,” Haynes said. “This production is a celebration of the talent that is not only present in our student body, but also our faculty.”
