Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College and its Workforce Solutions team have wrapped up Project STEM camps held at the Whitesburg and Middlesboro campuses.

The camps, which ran for two days, were open to children ages 12-15 and featured segments on energy, environmental science, physics and mathematics. Over 125 children from Letcher and Bell counties took part in the camps coordinated by Sherri Clark and Dr. Vic Adams, along with Deborah Young, Ron Brunty, Dr. Joseph Johnson and Willie Blechschmidt.

Students enjoyed the opportunity to build bird houses, observe a demonstration on robotics and the utilization of a drone for research through innovative technologies and take a tour of an agriculture project and a raptor rehabilitation center. Additionally, students worked in teams to design and construct catapults and were delighted as they fired water-filled balloons across the campus lawn.

The event was held in partnership between the Kentucky lieutenant governor’s office, the Kentucky Community and Technical College System and SKCTC’s Whitesburg and Middlesboro campuses.

Working to make the camp at Middlesboro a success were support from Middlesboro High School, Vaughn and Melton Engineering, the Bell-Whitley Community Action Agency, Long’s Pic Pac and Food City of Middlesboro.

Adding to the success of the camp in Whitesburg were Kentucky Environmental Education Consultants, the Natural Resource Conservation Service and the Letcher County Extension Service/Raptor Rehabilitation Center directed by Mitch Whitaker.

Brunty, who helped direct the event, noted the camps were a positive experience as well as a great opportunity for all who participated.

“It was such a great happening for the kids to be exposed to environmental and natural sciences. They learned much and enjoyed the experience greatly,” he said.
