U.S. Hwy. 25E South in front of the Dixie Plaza Hotel in Tazewell was lined with numerous law enforcement vehicles Thursday evening, as an alleged federal fugitive was located there by area officials. As of 9 p.m., Claiborne County Sheriff David Ray and other officials were on the scene waiting on agents from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Marshal Service to arrive. The fugitive, identified as a man from Newport, Tenn., has warrants for his arrest from federal authorities, according to officials. Witnesses said that the man was barricaded inside a room for a time. He was later taken into custody, booked at the Claiborne County Jail and was awaiting transfer. His name was not released as of press time. In addition to the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department, the Tazewell Police Department, New Tazewell Police Department and Claiborne County EMS responded to the scene.
