The Festival of the Mountain Masters kicked off Friday at the Village Mall in Harlan, with artists and craftsmen from all over the region on hand to display their work.

With nearly 50 vendors, this year’s event is sure to have something for everybody.

Along with vendors, several artisans demonstrated different crafts including pottery, painting and wood turning.

John Brock, a wood-turner from Bird Branch, demonstrated the art of wood turning.

“I’m turning a bowl out of Kentucky Coffee Tree,” said Brock when asked what he was working on.

Brock said he was demonstrating the use of a lathe, different types of gouges and other wood turning tools.

Brock is a veteran of many Mountain Masters events.

“This makes 10 years I’ve been here,” said Brock.

According to Brock, he’s been practicing his craft for more than a decade.

“I started probably 12 or 14 years ago, as a hobby,” said Brock. “I’ve made it a goal since I started to turn every species of wood native to Kentucky.”

Brock said he has accomplished that goal.

“The Kentucky Coffee Tree was at one time was our state tree,” said Brock. “It’s been switched back now to the tulip poplar. There’s not a great deal of it growing in this part of the state.’

Brock has many of his creations for sale at this year’s Mountain Masters.

The Festival of the Mountain Masters will be continuing from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. today.
