A Middlesboro woman was arrested on Monday after allegedly possessing and trafficking drugs.


Angela Shumate, 34, was arrested by Middlesboro Police Officer Jeremiah Johnson and charged with first-degree possession of a controlled substance and first-degree trafficking a controlled substance.


According to the arrest citation, police found 16 blue tablets believed to be oxycodone inside the van in which Shumate was traveling. Following a search, police said they also found $324 in mixed bills in a jacket pocket and $414 in mixed bills in another area.


Shumate was also charged with failure to or improper signal and operating a motor vehicle under the influence. She was lodged in the Bell County Detention Center and was released on Tuesday.


In other police news, Charlotte A. Brooks, 37, of Pineville, was arrested on Tuesday by Kentucky State Police Trooper Michael Cornett and charged with making a false statement to prevent reduction of benefits over $100.


She was released from custody the same day as her arrest on a $500 cash bond.
