The Bell County Board of Education will have a special guest speaker on Monday during opening day for school personnel.
At 8 a.m., Carl Hurley will be speaking in the Bell County High School gym.
Hurley is widely known as “America’s Funniest Professor.” Prior to becoming a certified speaking professional and full-time speaker/entertainer, he was a professor at Eastern Kentucky University for eight years.
“I am absolutely thrilled to have him (Hurley) back in Bell County again,” said Bell County Superintendent Yvonne Gilliam.
Gilliam said he is a great, funny motivational speaker who talks about the value of education.
“He is a very, very entertaining individual,” said Gilliam. “He keeps you laughing, and yet he conveys a very strong motivational message.”
Gilliam also she would like to invite any Bell County retired teacher to come and listen to the speaker and eat breakfast.
“He was such a hit with our people before, I think some of our retired teachers might enjoy coming out that morning and joining us for his presentation,” said Gilliam.
Hurley has made many radio and television appearances across the United States and is a regular on Sirius XM radio on Laugh USA and Blue Collar channels. He is known for believing that humor is the best carrier for his message.
Hurley has also been featured on what was formerly the Nashville Network and made numerous appearances on the Bill Gaither Homecoming Series. He has been inducted into the National Speakers Association CPAE Hall of Fame. He has also been inducted into EKU’s Alumni Hall of Fame.
Hurley grew up in eastern Kentucky and now resides in Lexington. He holds a Bachelor of Science and a master’s degree in Industrial Education from Eastern Kentucky University and a Doctorate in Education from the University of Missouri.
