The Middlesboro Middle School girls basketball team recently completed their regular season with a record of 16-4.
The Lady Jackets closed the season with a wins over South Laurel, 47-28, and Knox Central, 32-19. MMS also recently took third place in the 18-team Whitley County Classic 8th grade tournament.
Against South Laurel, the Lady Jackets were led by Blair Green’s 27 points while Hannah Warren and Rachel Hensley each scored seven. Jamayha Poe, Malorie Carter and Brenna Voges added two points apiece.
In the win over Knox Central, Green put in 16 points while Carter added five and Hensley four. Poe finished with three points with Warren and Voges scoring two each.
The Lady Jackets opened play in the Whitley County Classic with another meeting against Knox Central. Green scored 21 points, Poe added eight and Voges six in a 44-38 win. Hensley scored four points in that one with Baylee Woody and Carter added two and Warren one. The wins over the Lady Panther avenged an earlier loss to Knox Central.
The Lady Jackets advanced to the semifinals with a 47-43 win over Pulaski County. Green led the way with 27 points while Warren finished with eight. Rounding out the scoring were Poe and Hensley with four each and Carter and Voges with two apiece.
MMS dropped a 46-37 decision to Elkhorn in the tournament semifinals. Green scored 21 in that one with Poe adding six, Warren five, Baylee Woody three and Hensley two.
Middlesboro took third place with a 40-26 win over Clay County. Warren stepped up to lead the team with 19 points in that one. Green finished with nine while Carter, Voges and Hensley added four each. That win also avenged an early season loss to the Lady Tigers.
The Lady Jacket 8th graders will be competing in the Kentucky Middle School State Tournament in Lexington on Oct. 25-27. This group was the state runners up as 6th graders and placed fifth in last year as 7th graders.
