It’s Hall of Fame weekend at Pineville High School and this year’s inductees will be recognized at halftime of the Mountain Lions’ game against Allen Central this evening.

This year’s inductees include modern era athletes Tuck Woolum, Dan Haley, Biff Madon, J.W. Webb and Tommie Peace Goodin; legendary athlete Calvin Bird; school professional Ted Gilbert, distinguished alumni Dr. David C. Asher, Tom Mills and Admiral John M. “Pegleg” Hoskins; honorary inductees Inez and Fred Bishop and the 1954 Mountain Lion football team.

“There’s a whole bunch of pride coming back into town with so many men and women who love Pineville High School and who really played a big part in making it what it is today,” Mountain Lion coach Bart Elam said. “It’s exciting and exciting for the kids to play under a different set of eyes than what they’re used to playing. They want to play hard and represent the school, show some folks that haven’s seen Pineville play in a while what we’re all about.”

Elam said the team is especially excited to see a few people who are close to the current program being recognized. That list includes former Lion standout quarterback and coach Tuck Woolum; Tommie Peace Goodin, who has served as kind of the team mom for the current group of Mountain Lions and had a great basketball career during her high school years; and coach Dan Haley, a PHS graduate who went on to play for the University of Kentucky and had a very successful coaching career at several stops in the state.

“It’s a big honor and I’m happy for everyone who is being inducted. I’m sure I’ve somebody out, but those guys are still really close to our program and they’ve been really good to us since I’ve been here,” Elam added.

As for the Mountain Lions, they come into tonight’s game at 3-2 after an open date last week. The team has really come together after opening the year with a 55-32 loss at Paintsville. A turning point may have come in a week three loss at Middlesboro when the Lions managed to stay within 22 points. Since then Pineville has rolled to wins over McCreary Central (43-0) and at Lynn Camp (30-6).

“The most important thing is that we have gotten better each and every week,” Elam said. “Early in the season, for the coaching staff as much as the players, it’s about feeling out the team and figuring out how this group can play their best and which position is best for the kids. We did that early and we feel confident in the direction we’re heading. We’re really excited about the second half of the season.”

Allen Central (1-4) is also coming off an open date. The Rebels only win came against Jenkins (32-26), a team in Pineville’s district. Outside of that they’ve managed only 8 points combined in losses to East Ridge, Magoffin County, Betsy Layne and Paintsville.

“They’ve played a solid schedule and they really handled Jenkins, which is the team they’ve played that best compares to us,” Elam said. “They’ve got a big, solid football team and they probably match up better against us with that size than our last couple of opponents.

“Allen Central is always a fun game because they don’t play a lot of the same teams we play. So you go in to it a little bit in the dark and that makes it fun before heading into district play. It also makes you did a little deeper when you’re putting together the game plan.”

The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m.
