The Kentucky Public Service Commission wants consumers to limit their impact on home heating bills by taking a few steps to reduce their energy consumption.

Simple measures such as turning down the thermostat a few degrees can significantly reduce consumption and therefore reduce energy bills.

“It’s also never too late to seal leaks around windows, doors and other openings, to cover windows with plastic sheeting, and to take other low-cost steps to keep cold air out and warm air in,” said PSC Chairman David Armstrong.

Since severity of weather is the factor which determines energy usage, the best weapon consumers have against high energy costs is taking simple steps to reduce usage Armstrong said.

Budget billing will allow customers to pay the same amount each month, based on average monthly usage throughout the year.

Energy audits and home weatherization including caulking, weatherstripping, energy-efficient doors and windows, and added insulation in an attic or crawl space can also help to reduce energy costs for the consumer.

Armstrong emphasized there are several programs available to help consumers who may struggle to pay their heating bills. Assistance is available from local community action agencies and utility companies, but funds are limited and can run out during the season, he said.

“Do not allow a difficulty in paying a utility bill to become a crisis,” Armstrong said. “Now is the time to take the necessary steps if you think you may need assistance in paying your heating bill this winter.”
