Middlesboro ARH Hospital will host a Community Appreciation and Family Health Fair on its front lawn on from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. The public is invited to attend.
“We are offering free health screenings to the community during the family health fair,” said Michael Slusher, Middlesboro ARH Community CEO. “ARH health care providers will be on hand to assess your results and discuss your risk for stroke and diabetes.”
Free health screenings include blood pressure, pulse, pulse oximetry, glucose, cholesterol and grip testing. Participants also can receive one-on-one health assessments, including stroke and diabetes, from ARH staff.
During the event, there will be free, nutritious food and a booth dedicated to teaching participants how to read food labels and choose nutritious foods for meals. Air Evac Lifeteam will offer membership information. The children will enjoy face painting, activity books and an inflatable slide. Teens and adults will enjoy live music, health education activities and a chance to win an Apple iPad.
“There will be something for everyone, and we invite you to join us for this special Community Appreciation and Family Health Fair,” added Slusher.
For the men who attend the health fair, a discounted $10 voucher for a PSA blood test will be offered. Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by the cells of the prostate gland. PSA is present in small quantities in the serum of normal men, and is often elevated in the presence of prostate cancer and in other prostate disorders. A blood test to measure PSA is the most effective test currently available for the early detection of prostate cancer.
For the ladies who attend, ARH will offer educational sessions on how-to-do breast self-exams. Information will be provided about the importance of breast cancer screenings, and for those who do not have insurance coverage for mammograms, Middlesboro ARH Hospital is offering a special rate of $50 for screening exams scheduled in October.
