BIG STONE GAP, Va. — Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park will hold its annual True Art Showcase and Children’s Contest Oct. 1-20, celebrating the works of area artists.

True Art, named in honor of James True, the first curator of the museum, features the works of today’s local artists in a show that celebrates the creativity and talents of our friends and neighbors. Works in a variety of mediums will be on display throughout the museum from.

Regular admission rates apply. The deadline for submitting art for the showcase is Sept. 27; due to limited presentation space, limit submission to four pieces per artist. Participation forms are available from the museum during regular operating hours.

The showcase also includes a student art competition reflecting this year’s theme, “Scenery of Southwest Virginia,” open to students in grades K-12. Entries should portray some aspect of Southwest Virginia’s rich culture, history and/or natural surroundings. Drawings and paintings are welcome. A maximum size of 11x17 and welcome smaller submissions are requested

All entries should be accompanied by the student’s name, school name and grade. Judges consider entries in the following groupings: Kindergarten through second-grade, third-through-fifth grade, sixth-through-eighth grade and freshmen through seniors. All submissions should be received at the museum by Sept. 24. Winning entries will be on display in the museum from Oct. 1-20. Winners in each group will receive certificates at a reception held at the museum Oct. 6.
