LEXINGTON (AP) — Trent Gilbert scored 29 points to lead Scott County to a 64-55 win over Johnson Central on Friday in the quarterfinals of the Kentucky boys Sweet 16 state basketball tournament at Rupp Arena.
The Cardinals (34-3) will play Louisville Trinity in the state semifinals at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The Shamrocks defeated Hopkinsville 74-56 in a quarterfinal game Friday.
Gilbert, the only Cardinal player in double figures, drained three 3-pointers and scored 18 points in the first half. Gilbert made 14 of 14 free throws, including four straight in the closing seconds to seal the win.
Johnson Central (26-7), which won the 15th Region, tied the score at 49-49 with 4:44 remaining before the Cardinals pulled away down the stretch.
Trinity 74, Hopkinsville 56
Raymond Spalding scored 14 points to lead Louisville Trinity to a 74-56 win over Hopkinsville on Friday in the quarterfinals of the Kentucky boys Sweet 16 state basketball tournament at Rupp Arena.
The Shamrocks (31-5) advance to the semifinals and will play the winner of the Scott County-Johnson Central game at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
Jax Levitch made four of his team’s six 3-pointers and also finished with 14 points.
Trinity, the Region 7 champion, scored seven of the first nine points and used a 12-2 run in the second quarter to push the margin to double digits and put the game away.
The Tigers (31-3), 2nd Region champion, had an 18-game winning streak snapped.
Quan Poindexter made 10 of 14 free throws and led Hopkinsville with 19 points.
Bowling Green 64, McCracken Co. 58
Tucker Sine scored 18 points to lead Bowling Green to a 64-58 win over McCracken County on Friday night in the quarterfinals of the Kentucky Sweet 16 boys state basketball tournament at Rupp Arena.
The Purples (29-6) will play the Bardstown-Covington Catholic winner in the state semifinals at 8 p.m. Saturday.
Kentucky Mr. Football Nacarius Fant followed Sine with 12 points. Fant scored eight points in the first half. Sine made two crucial treys in the fourth quarter and 11 of 14 free throws.
The Mustangs (25-9) won the 1st Region title and went 1-1 in their state debut.
Kam Chumbler led McCracken County with 17 points, while Jared Burnett added 16. Burnett made three 3-pointers and scored nine points in the first half for the Purples, the Region 4 winner.
CovCath 61, Bardstown 54
Nick Ruthsatz scored 21 points to lead Covington Catholic to a 61-54 win over Bardstown in the quarterfinals of the Kentucky boys Sweet 16 state basketball tournament Friday night at Rupp Arena.
The Colonels outlasted the Tigers in a game that featured 14 ties and nine lead changes. Covington Catholic (31-2), champions of Region 9, made 6 of 10 free throws in the final minute to seal the win.
Mark Schult followed Ruthsatz with 17 points and Cole Vonhandorf followed with 10 for the Colonels.
Covington Catholic will take on Bowling Green in the state semifinals set for 8 p.m. Saturday. The Purples defeated McCracken County 64-58 in a quarterfinal game Friday night.
The Tigers (27-7), winners of the 5th Region, got 14 points from Keanu Young in their first state quarterfinal appearance. L.J. Cowherd followed with 13 points and Seivon Schooling added 10 for the Tigers.
