RUTLEDGE, Tenn. — There’s still a gap between the Cumberland Gap Lady Panthers an the teams at the top of District 2-AA, but that is getting smaller. On Tuesday, the Lady Panthers played error-free ball and stayed within striking distance of Grainger, but the Lady Grizzlies held on for a 4-2 win.

Grainger (20-9) got three hits and a run scored from Mykayla Fennell while Kimberlyn Thomson singled and doubled to drive in one run and score another. Tasha Brady and Kaylee Smith both doubled, Kiara Coffey added a single and Kalie Chandler singled twice and scored a run.

Freshman outfielder Samantha Pierce led the Lady Panthers with two hits and drove in a run. Genna Lake doubled and Cumberland Gap also got hits from Katelyn McCarty, Lindsey Elliott, Jourdan Thacker and Julia Satterfield.

Samanth Spradling went all seven innings to get the win. She scattered eight hits and allowed two runs while striking out four and not walking a batter.

Lake took the loss for Cumberland Gap. The senior gave up four runs on ten hits with one strikeout and three walks.

Grainger jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Fennell singled, stole second, and then came around to score on Thomson’s one-out double. With two away, Coffey singled to bring Thomson home.

The Lady Panthers threatened in the second when Elliott and Lake both had singles. But Spradling struck out the other three batters in the inning.

Lake worked her way out a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the bottom of the inning. She got her only strikeout in a big spot and then pop-up to end the threat with no runs scoring.

In the third, Tessa Pittman walked and advanced to third on a one-out single from Jourdan Thacker. But Thacker was picked off at first by Coffey and Spradling got a strikeout to end the inning.

Two walks opened the Lady Grizzly third. But Lake induced a grounder to third for a force out and then got a pair of fly balls to end the inning.

The score remained 2-0 until thebottom of the fifth when Grainger got back-to-back two-out doubles from Brady and Thompson to push the lead to 3-0.

Cumberland Gap threatened again in the sixth. McCarty singled with one out and went to second on a passed ball. Pittman moved her to third with a ground out and Elliott followed with a grounder to short, but the throw home was in time for Coffey to tag McCarty out at the plate.

Chandler singled to start the Grainger sixth and advanced to third on a pair of ground outs. She then scored on a passed ball to make it 4-0.

The Lady Panthers finally broke through in the top of the seventh. Satterfied poked a one-out singled to right and Lake followed with a double down the right field line. Pierce singled to bring Satterfield in and courtesy runner Cheyenne Sutton scored on Chelsey Williams’ fielder’s choice grouder to short. Spradling came back to get another ground out to end the game.

Cumberland Gap (13-7) is scheduled to play at Campbell County on Friday and at West Greene on Monday.
