Fellow students, faculty and staff are mourning the death of one of their own at Cumberland Gap High School today.

Ryan L. Marcum, known as Logan, was killed Monday evening as the result of a one-vehicle wreck according to a Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) report.

The THP says that Marcum, 17, of Harrogate, was driving his Chevrolet CK1 truck northbound on Big Springs Union Road when he hit a curve and lost control on the snow and ice covered roadway. The vehicle went off the left side of the road and rolled several times. The vehicle came to rest on the driver’s side, and according to the report rolled onto the driver after he was partially ejected.

A passenger in the truck, Jacob A. Ayers, also 17 and of Harrogate, was injured. No further information about his condition is available at this time.

Neither Marcum nor Ayers was wearing a seat belt. Investigators say in the report that they think seat belts might have made a difference.

CGHS students and anyone who wanted to were invited to a prayer gathering Tuesday morning at 9:15 a.m., before school started, as county schools were operating on a two-hour delay.

Trooper Chad Arnwine is the investigating officer. An additional report is expected to be released.
