After being held to just six free throws in the first half, Knox Central standout Cody Miller scored ten of his 25 points in the third quarter as the Panthers out-scored Pineville 18-8 to take a 53-40 lead.
The Lions got as close as eight points on a three-point play from Shawn Madon early in the fourth. But the Panthers hit 8-of-13 free throws down the stretch and pulled away late to win by 19.
Pineville’s Brandon Hollingsworth hit a 3-pointer and added four free throws in the first period, Madon added five points and John Simpson four and the Lions led 16-15 after one.
Hollingsworth stayed hot in quarter number two as he put up nine of his 19 points in the frame. Senior Tyler Tuttle added four as the Pineville went toe-to-toe with the Panthers.
With Miller being held in check by the Lions, Tanner Broughton picked up the slack for Knox Central in the second quarter. He scored nine of his 19 points in the period as the Panthers took a 35-32 lead into the half.
Pineville managed just two field goals in the third: baskets by Madon and Simpson. Hollingsworth hit three free throws.
But it was Miller who took control of the game with a 3 and three two-pointers as Knox Central expanded their lead and went on to the win.
Madon finished with 16 points for Pineville and Simpson added 13 to join Hollingsworth in double figures. Tobie Merida and Travis Canady added nine points each for the Panthers.
Both teams are back in action Friday as Pineville (4-10, 1-3) travels to Corbin while Knox Central (9-9, 2-1) plays at Wayne County.
