MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — The Lady Railsplitters concluded play in the Bobcat Blast by splitting a double-header against the Lady Hurricanes of Georgia Southwestern State University on Sunday afternoon. Lincoln Memorial University (1-3) was sunk 4-2 in the opener, but responded by powering their way past Georgia Southwestern (2-2) 10-6 in the finale.

Game 2

Georgia Southwestern 4, Lincoln Memorial 2

The Lady Railsplitters fell behind 2-0 early in the contest but cut into that deficit in the top half of the fourth inning with a run. However, the Lady Hurricanes answered with two more runs in the bottom half of the fourth and cut Lincoln Memorial’s comeback attempt short in the seventh frame.

Freshman Samantha Smith was saddled with loss despite a strong outing, as she tallied six innings pitched and allowed only four earned runs on seven hits. She was bested by the two-headed attack in the circle for the Lady Hurricanes of Allison Pastor and Ashley Cavender. Pastor made the start and limited the Lady Railsplitters to two runs on five hits in six and a third innings pitched. Cavender closed the game out with an unblemished two-thirds innings pitched in the top of the seventh.

The Lady Hurricanes got a two-out, two-run double from Kiley Doster in the bottom of the second inning. LMU made it 2-1 in the foruth when Jordyn Wilson singled in Cierra Mudd, who had singled earlier.

Gerogia Southwestern answered with two more runs in their half of the frame as Doster and Mason Moreland delivered RBI singles for a 4-1 lead.

The Lady Railsplitters went down in order in the fifth and sixth, but rallied in the top of the seventh. Kirstin Toole opened that frame with a single and moved to second on Wilson’s ground out. Brianna Mulkey drove Toole home with a triple in the next at-bat, however, the next two Lady Railsplitters went down in order to seal a 4-2 victory for the Lady Hurricanes.

Lincoln Memorial posted five hits in the contest as Mulkey, Sarah Walz, Mudd, Toole and Wilson each recorded a one-hit outing.

Game 2

Lincoln Memorial 10, Georgia Southwestern 6

The Lady Railsplitters faced an early 4-0 deficit, but responded with 10 runs over the final five innings with scores in each of those frames en route to a 10-6 victory over the Lady Hurricanes.

Samantha Smith made the start for the Lady Railsplitters but lasted only a third of an inning after allowing three hits and three runs in the top of the first. Kirstin Toole came on in relief to earn the win for Lincoln Memorial, moving to 1-2 on the season after tallying six and two-thirds innings pitched. Toole allowed seven hits, struck out four and only surrendered one earned run.

The Lady Hurricanes opened the scoring with the three-run blast off the bat of Ashley Clifton in the first. Georgia Southwestern added another run in the top of the second with an RBI single by Jordan Miller.

The Lady Railsplitters quickly flipped the script by turning it on offensively, beginning with a two-run rally in the bottom of the second. Cierra Mudd kept the inning alive with a two-out single and Kirstin Toole capitalized in the next at-bat with a two-run blast to make it 4-2.

LMU kept the offense clicking in the bottom of the third with a three-run outburst on the wings of five hits in that frame. Sarah Walz got the scoring started with an RBI double, while Laura Taricano scored on an error and Mudd drove in another run with an RBI single later in the inning.

The Lady Railsplitters and Lady Hurricanes traded two-run frames in the bottom of the fourth and the top of the fifth before Mudd notched an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth to add another run for the Lady Railsplitters.

Holding an 8-6 advantage, LMU pounded out two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Mulkey led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on Kelly Dreier’s ground out. Amanda Snow would drive Mulkey home with a single while Taricano once again scored later in the inning on a Lady Hurricane error as the Lady Railsplitters went on to the 10-6 win.

LMU got 10 hits in the outing with eight of the nine batters in the lineup recording at least one hit. Mulkey went two-for-three with a pair of runs in the leadoff spot for LMU. Snow, Walz, Mudd and Toole also posted two-hit performances for the Lady Railsplitters with Mudd and Toole chipping in with two RBIs apiece.

The Lady Railsplitters will return to action Saturday with a trip to Dahlonega, Ga., for the North Georgia Classic. LMU is slated to play North Georgia at 11 a.m. and Lander at 1 p.m. Their home games with Milligan, orginally scheduled for Tuesday, have been postponed due to inclement weather.
