Radio’s football coverage sparks response

To the editor,

Conceding the fact that Bell County High School has a good football and many fans, I would like to remind the local radio stations that Pineville High School AND Middlesboro High School, also have football teams. These young men practice just as hard as BCHS, they have just as many fans as BCHS and they have friends and relatives who cannot or are unable to attend the games. These fans depend on the radio broadcasts to follow their respective teams.

However, this past Friday, Sept. 25th no broadcast of the Pineville nor Middlesboro game could be found on any station that I could get, but it sounded like there were 3 different stations carrying the Bobcats' game. I hardly think that is fair nor good business practice for these stations. Do the sponsors of the Bell County broadcasts realize that they most likely have many, many customers from both Pineville and Middlesboro that trade at their businesses?

I ask all fans who cannot make it to the games to listen closely to these radio stations and if you feel the same let them and their sponsors know how you feel. Sincerely

Irene Adams

Should a road be named after a felon?

To the editor,

It seems we read and talk every day about setting excellent examples for our children. We are reminded to be good parents, obey the law and teach our children to be good citizens.

Please explain to me then, why we pay tribute to honor some of those who have committed crimes and have been convicted and sentenced to serve jail time? I don't understand this way of thinking, or what message this is giving to our young people and community.

Case in point - WHY did we name a portion of US 25E for Robert L. Madon? True, he has accomplished much for the city of Pineville. HOWEVER, he is a convicted felon. Is that giving our children and community the correct message? I think not.

Dr. James S. Golden and Andy Williams were also instrumental in the recovery of Pineville after the 1977 flood. Have they been honored or recognized as well? They have never been convicted of any crime or sentenced.

Are we sending good messages to our children and community? You be the judge.

As a conscientious, law abiding citizen and Bell Countian, I am,

Sue Richards-Meadows

Middlesboro
