Pineville High School will change to a seven-period school day next year.

The school board approved the change during regular session on Monday.

Currently, the school uses modified block scheduling. Students have two 90-minute blocks that change each semester. Students also have three one-hour long classes that continue for the entire year. The school has used this process since the 1990s.

Next year, the school will have seven one-hour long periods during the school day. Students will still be able to receive seven credits a year as they did under the modified block scheduling.

According to PHS Principal Bill Keyes, several students and teachers were not fond of the block scheduling system. Some individuals felt there was time wasted under the system.

Keyes said some subjects are better suited for block scheduling system, while others are better for the seven-period schedule. AP Biology was one subject mentioned as better suited for block scheduling because it involves a lab.

“It’s hard to keep kids’ attention for an hour and a half,” said Keyes of the time allotted for block scheduling.

The school board also approved for the high school to purchase a color photo poster-making machine. The high school will pay three annual installments of $2,656.

This machine will be used to make motivational poster, awards posters, classroom posters, extracurricular posters and related items.

Buying the machine will save the school some money, according to Keyes.

Currently, schools pay $35 for each extracurricular poster. Keyes stated the school has spent over $13,000 on these posters over the past five years. With the new machine, it will cost only about $2 per poster.

The poster machine the school currently has prints only black and white text. The current machine cannot print photos.

During the average daily attendance report (ADA), Paula Goodin reported the elementary school had an attendance of 272 students and the high school had an attendance of 227 students on Monday. This brought the average attendance for the district to 93.1 percent.

Other business taken care of during the meeting included:

* Approval of minutes from the previous meeting;

* Approval of accounts due and payable;

* A year to date budget report;

* Approval of the 2013-14 board goals;

* Approval of second reading of the 2013-14 tentative calendar;

* Approval of facility use requests;

* Approval of fundraising requests.
