A Pineville student will be competing in the state competition of the Governor’s Cup in March. Andrew Profitt, who is a middle school student at Pineville, was recognized during the regular school board meeting on Monday for winning the regional Governor’s Cup competition in the subject of humanities.
He competed against students from Page, Bell Central, Harlan and Wallins. He will compete in Louisville on March 17.
Pineville High School principal Bill Keyes also addressed the board during the meeting. Keyes stated the school gave a mock EXPLORE and PLAN test to the seventh grade and freshman.
After reviewing the scores, chairperson Ann Gaines stated the students performed above the standard in both test. Students are mandated to take the EXPLORE test during the fall of their eighth grade year and the PLAN test during the fall of their sophomore year.
The PLAN and EXPLORE test are each versions of the ACT, which students are required to take during their senior year in high school.
The practice PLAN and EXPLORE test is another example of ways Pineville schools are attempting to increase ACT test scores. Superintendent Terry Hayes explained seventh-graders this year will have taken at least five versions of the ACT before the mandated exam their senior year.
They will take a practice EXPLORE exams their seventh grade year, the mandated EXPLORE while in the eighth grade, a practice PLAN during their freshman year, the mandated PLAN exam during their sophomore year and then a mock ACT during their junior year.
