HARROGATE, Tenn. — The Railsplitter men’s basketball team churned out 47 second-half points and limited Ohio Midwestern College to 29.4% shooting from the field en route to an overwhelming 79-46 victory over the Rams in the kickoff for the 2012-13 campaign on Saturday evening in Tex Turner Arena.
LMU, ranked 18th nationally in the NABC preseason poll, opens the season with a 1-0 mark, while Ohio Midwestern drops to 0-1 on the year.
Senior Jake Troyli (Largo, Fla.) paced the Railsplitters offensively with a game-high 19 points in 32 minutes of action. He also tallied six rebounds and a pair of blocks in the win for LMU.
Lorenza Ross (Richmond Hill, Ga.) tallied 13 points on a highly-efficient 4-6 from the field and 5-7 clip from the charity stripe. Ross was also a force defensively for the Railsplitters with a game-high four steals.
As a unit, the Railsplitters had 11 steals and forced the Rams into 23 turnovers. LMU limited their miscues with only ten turnovers in the contest.
Senior Wally Jones (Greensboro, N.C.) finished with 11 points for the Railsplitters to go along with four assists and a steal. Dustin Craig (Knoxville) filled the stat sheet with eight rebounds, seven points, one block and one steal.
The Railsplitters and Rams each had 38 rebounds in the game, as Lincoln Memorial was paced by nine boards from sophomore Keenan Peterson (College Park, Ga.).
Ohio Midwestern’s effort was highlighted by Greg Howard’s 16 points on 6-15 shooting from the field. Howard was the lone Ram to finish in double-figures for the game, as Gene Primus and Kadeem Palmer were the next highest scorers with six points apiece.
The Railsplitters limited Ohio Midwestern to only 29.4% shooting in the contest and 28.6% shooting from beyond the arc. LMU was equally potent on the offensive end, shooting at a 46.8% clip despite a 4-14 run from three-point land.
Lincoln Memorial ran out to an early 12-2 lead in the opening four minutes of action before settling for a 32-19 halftime advantage. In the second stanza, the Railsplitters tallied 47 points on 51.7% shooting while limiting the Rams to only 27 points over that same span to take a commanding 79-46 victory to open the season.
LMU returns to the court Friday, as they host Bob Jones University for a nonconference match up in Tex Turner Arena. That game will kick off at 7 p.m. on the campus of Lincoln Memorial University.
