Schools close during competitions

There is no school today for the Pineville Independent School District.

The Pineville varsity girls’ basketball team won the Region 13th All “A” Tournament on Jan. 11. The team beat Lynn Camp and advanced to the Kentucky Touchstone Energy All “A” Classic, which is held today through Sunday at the Frankfort Convention Center. The team is scheduled to play against Newport Central Catholic today at 1 p.m.

There will be no school on Friday for Middlesboro Independent Schools. This closure is due to the tournament schedule for the boys’ basketball team.

The Middlesboro varsity boys’ basketball team won the Region 13th All “A” Tournament on Sunday. The team beat Pineville and will advance to the Kentucky Touchstone Energy All “A” Classic. The team is scheduled to play against Owen County on Thursday, at 9:30 p.m., also at the Frankfort Convention Center.

Additionally, Middlesboro Independent Schools are having an early release day today. Middlesboro Primary and Middlesboro Intermediate will be releasing at 12:45 p.m., Middlesboro Middle School will release at 1:10 p.m. and Middlesboro High School will release at 1:15 p.m.

The early release is for teachers to have Professional Learning Community (PLC) time. PLC time is when teachers collaborate in order to improve and refine their teaching methods. Middlesboro Independent Schools allow teachers to have PLC time every couple of weeks.

The Pineville varsity cheerleaders won the 13th regional Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) Class 1A Middle Category Championships on Jan. 5. The cheerleaders will advance on to the KHSAA state competition on Saturday. There will be no school closures do to the cheerleading competition.

The competition is to be held at WKU E.A. Diddle Arena in Bowling Green. The cheerleaders are scheduled to perform against 12 other teams at 2 p.m., with the awards ceremony immediately following the performances. The tentative scheduled time for the awards ceremony is 4:30 p.m.
