Tommy “Kip” Bays, age 69 of Johnson City died Tuesday morning, January 1, 2013 in the Johnson City Medical Center, Johnson City, TN following a brief illness. He was a native of Middlesboro, Kentucky and the son of the late James Tyler and Mary Kate Britton Bays. Mr. Bays was a retired employee of the Straight Creek Mining Company in Pineville, Kentucky and was the owner of K and T Trucking for the last 20 years. He enjoyed NASCAR and was a loyal Dale Earnhardt fan. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, James Tyler Bays, Jr.
He is survived by; his wife Nyda Cochran Bays of the home, two daughters and sons-in-law, Renee and Jess Lockhart of Bluff City and Tommie Sue and Ike Curtis of Maryville, two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Missy Bays of Johnson City and Tommy Clifford and Rachel Bays, Jr of Fayetteville, WV, three grandchildren, Drew and Sara Curtis of Maryville, and Matthew Bays of Johnson City, two sisters and brothers-in-law, Brenda and Jerry Barrows of Pell City, AL and Mary Sue and Ronnie Vance of Tullahoma, TN, one sister-in-law, Opal Bays of Harrogate, TN and several nieces and nephews survive.
A service to celebrate the life of Tommy “Kip” Bays will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 5, 2013 in the chapel of the Shumate Funeral Home in Middlesboro, KY. The Rev. Dr. William Boyd Bingham, III will be the presiding minister. Interment will follow in Green Hills Cemetery. Music will be under the direction of Mr. Dickie Siler, pianist and Benny Howard, soloist. The family will receive friends on Saturday from noon till 1:45 PM in the chapel of the funeral home prior to the service.
