BARBOURVILLE — Union senior linebacker Zach Eagler and senior offensive lineman Jonathan Shipley were named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America College Division Football Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Eagler earned a spot on the first team while Shipley made the second team. Eagler and Shipley are the eighth and ninth Union student-athletes to make an Academic All-America team, and this marks the first time Union placed two on the same team. Also, Shipley is the first repeat honoree as he made the second team in 2011.
A business administration major with a 3.71 G.P.A., Eagler made 73 tackles with two sacks and 4.5 tackles for lost yardage. The Florence, Ky., native also had two fumble recoveries. He recorded a season-high nine tackles three times. For his career, Eagler tallied 221 total tackles, 10 tackles for a loss and two sacks. In addition, he forced and recovered three fumbles, intercepted one pass and broke up three others. In 2010, Eagler returned a fumble 71 yards for a touchdown.
Eagler is the third student-athlete in Union history to make the Academic All-America first team, joining Kevin Smith (Baseball - 2006) and Allison Fowler (Women’s Basketball - 2007-08).
Shipley, a Cumberland Gap graduate, is a health and physical education major with a 3.36 G.P.A. He earned All-Mid-South Conference East First Team honors after anchoring an offensive line which paved the way for the Bulldog offense which averaged 338.2 yards per game. During the Tazewell, Tenn., native’s career, Union has had two 1,000-yard rushers and posted two of the program’s top scoring seasons, including a program-best 440 points in 2010.
Union posted a 4-7 overall record in 2012 and went 1-4 in MSC East play.
