The 43rd Annual RoHo Fishing Tournament was held at the Beach Island Mariana Resort on Norris Lake on May 4 and 5. This year, ticket sales and donations met and could exceed last year’s record-breaking turnout.
Top ticket sellers were Eddie Beeler, Jeff Higdon and Rusty Peace. A total of 174 people supported a child as well. It cost $30 to support a child for the shopping spree.
There were several categories of competition, including large mouth bass, small mouth bass, rock fish, walleye, crappie, bream sunfish shell-cracker and catfish.
Greg Hendrickson won the large mouth bass category. The fish he caught weighed 4.2 pounds.
Todd Willis won the small mouth bass category when he caught a 4.2 pound small mouth.
The rock fish category was won by Ed Green. He caught a 31.95 pound rock fish.
Joe Hammontree won the walleye category with a 2.45 walleye. William Hammontree won the crappie category with a 1.65 crappie.
Regina Caldwell caught the biggest bream sunfish shell-cracker. The fish weighed 1.11 pounds.
Penny Collins caught the biggest catfish at 38.7 pounds.
The RoHo Fishing Tournament is the only fund raising event held by the local civic club. Proceeds from the ticket sales are used to sponsor the Christmas Shopping Spree for children in the area who have been selected by teachers as needing help in order to have gifts for Christmas.
On the 2012 shopping spree, a total of $38,900 was spent on the children. The children were allowed to spend $110 for clothing and $40 for toys.
In addition, each child was given a pair of athletic shoes donated by an anonymous sponsor. There were 250 children who shopped in Walmart before being treated to lunch and a visit by Santa.
“I would like to thank all the supporters who made this possible,” said Lawrence Tuck of the Roho Club.
