Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam will deliver the keynote address at Lincoln Memorial University’s (LMU) Math and Science Building dedication on Oct. 12, at 3 p.m. on the main campus in Harrogate, Tenn.
“Governor Haslam is a strong advocate of higher education and we are honored he will be a part of this great day,” LMU Chairman Autry O.V. “Pete” DeBusk said. “LMU recognizes that the study of math and science has to be the cornerstone on which its future is laid. The new Math and Science Building is a learning center like no other in the state of Tennessee. As such, LMU is not only embracing a movement that is at the forefront of our national education agenda, we are stepping into the lead in our state’s mission of elevating math and science in schools at every level.”
The Math and Science Building is 140,000 square feet of state-of-the-art classroom, research, laboratory and office space. The $26 million facility houses undergraduate, graduate and professional programs of study at LMU and was partially funded through a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) loan program.
It is the largest building on campus and includes a 400-seat auditorium, microscopy suite, over 4,600 square feet of research labs, a large anatomy suit with four pods, and advanced biology, chemistry and physics facilities. All of the classrooms are enabled with lecture capture and streaming capabilities and the building features complete wireless internet integration.
“This building represents a giant leap for LMU,” President B. James Dawson said. “The facility shows LMU’s commitment to advanced learning for advanced students. Oct. 12 will truly be a banner day in our institution’s history and we can’t wait for our Governor, the state and the world to see the exciting things that are happening here.”
Governor Haslam was elected in 2010 with 65 percent of the vote. In his first two years in office he has focused on jobs and economic development, education initiatives and conservative fiscal leadership. He served as the Mayor of Knoxville for seven years prior to his election as governor. A graduate of Emory University, Haslam spent many years in leadership at his family’s Pilot Corporation, helping it grow from 800 to 14,000 employees during his tenure with the company.
LMU will award Governor Haslam with an honorary doctorate of public service during the program.
The dedication is part of the University’s Annual Homecoming and precedes a weekend packed with reunions, celebrations and honors. LMU will also celebrate its rich history in the sciences, a theme that is central to the building’s interior décor which features portraits of influential faculty members and accomplished alumni.
