HARROGATE, Tenn. — In a rematch of last years District 2-AA semifinal, Greeneville pulled out a 58-56 win over Cumberland Gap when Trevor Wright’s putback banked in just ahead of the final buzzer.
Wright scored all 11 of his points in the second half as the Greene Devils came back from a 12-point halftime deficit and a two-point hole with less than a minute to play.
Landon Duncan led Greeneville with 19 points and Zach Cobble finished with 10.
Cumberland Gap was led by senior Nathan Hatmaker’s 12 points while Blake Arnold and Isaac Daniels scored 10 apiece.
Hatmaker hit both ends of the bonus to give the Panthers a 55-54 lead with under two minutes to play. Cumberland Gap forced a turnover and Jordan King hit a free throw with 1:05 remaining to make it 56-54.
Daniels came up with a steal, but the ball was knocked loose from point guard Trevor Graves. With no foul called Duncan secured the ball and connected on a jumper to tie the game with about 30 seconds to go.
Cumberland Gap was playing for a final shot and called a timeout at the seven second mark. But Hays Culbreth came away with a steal on the inbounds pass to give the Devils the last possession. Duncan’s 12-footer was challenged by King and Arnold and came up short, but Wright was there to put in the game-winner just ahead of the buzzer.
Early on it was the Cumberland Gap defense putting on a clinic as they held Greeneville to just single baskets by Zach Cobble, Jacob Cobble and Cory Waddell in the first period.
Hatmaker scored four of his points in the first quarter, King hit two free throws and Blake Franklin added a basket. Tyler Parker came in off the bench to score five more Panther points and the CGHS lead was 13-6 after one.
Greeneville got six points off the bench from Taylor Bailey in the second quarter but Arnold matched that, Graves scored four, Hatmaker hit two free throws and Franklin and Matt Wade added baskets as Cumberland Gap’s lead grew to 29-17 by halftime.
The Devils turned the tables in the third quarter as Cumberland Gap was held to just two baskets by Daniels and a 3 from Jordan Bullins. Meanwhile, Wright scored nine points, Duncan seven and Waddle hit a 3 and Greeneville outscored the Panthers 24-7 to take a 41-36 lead into the fourth quarter.
Daniels and Hatmaker scored six points each in the final period, Arnold added four and Graves sank a 3-pointer but Greeneville got nine points from Duncan and a pair of 3s from Cobble. Wright’s only basket of the quarter was the game-winner.
Both teams are back in action Tuesday as Greeneville (6-1, 1-0) hosts South Greene while Cumberland Gap (1-2, 0-1) plays at Thomas Walker, Va.
