Local officers honored for impaired driving enforcement

Staff Report

Two local police officers were recognized during the 2012 Governor’s Impaired Driving Enforcement award ceremony put on by the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety. The ceremony was held at the Galt House Hotel and Suites in Louisville. Awards were presented to officers with the most impaired driving arrests in each agency and division.

Middlesboro police officer Barry Cowan and Pineville police officer Jason Williams were the two officers recognized from the area.

Cowan made a total of 67 impaired arrest in a department that houses 21 officers. The Middlesboro Police Department as a whole made 186 impaired driving arrest.

Williams made a total of 13 impaired arrest in a department that houses only eight officers. The Pineville Police Department made 31 impaired driving arrest as a whole.

“Impaired driving is not an accident — it’s an epidemic of careless disregard for human life,” said KOHS Director Bill Bell, who presented the awards at the ceremony. “These officers, their departments and agencies render a great service for public safety by removing drunken and drugged drivers from our roads.”

Last year, Kentucky recorded more than 5,600 crashes related to drugs and alcohol, resulting in 150 deaths and more than 3,000 injuries.

“Public safety improves exponentially every time an impaired driver is removed from the roadway,” said Kentucky State Police Commissioner Rodney Brewer. “Were it not for the actions of these men and women, there would undoubtedly be more crashes, injuries or worse on our roadways.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 1 in 3 Americans will be impacted by a drunken driving crash in his or her lifetime.

“Research shows high-visibility enforcement reduces impaired-driving fatalities by as much as 20 percent,” said NHTSA Region III Law Enforcement Liaison Bill Tower. “While many people are getting the message, there are still too many who just don’t understand that alcohol and driving are a fatal combination.”

Matt Jones with Kentucky Sports Radio recorded a public service announcement encouraging the use of designated drivers that airs during his daily radio show. Jones took the opportunity to praise the officers for their commitment to keeping Kentucky roads safe.

“Hard-working, high-profile coaches and athletes receive public recognition and accolades for their jobs,” said Jones. “You are here today because of your hard work and dedication to your job of saving lives, and we value your efforts.”

The officers on hand to be honored were to have included Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy Anthony Rakes, who tied for highest number of impaired driving arrests within his agency. But Rakes died from gunshot wounds sustained during a Nov. 14 traffic stop. After a moment of silence, Rakes’ award was accepted by Sheriff Jimmy Clements.

To raise awareness of the dangers of impaired driving and to alert the public of an increased enforcement presence over the holidays, the annual “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign will begin Dec. 14 and run through Jan. 1. This campaign is sponsored by NHTSA and the KOHS.

I would have liked to have known about this a few months ago. I have been looking for such a workshop that teaches country music. All I have been able to find has been Old Time and that has been a long distance away.

For over two decades, Mike Bussell has been serving the Tri-State area to meet the residents’ gun and ammunition needs.

In recognition of his service, Mike’s Gun Shop was nominated and selected as this week’s Surviving the Hard Times series.

What started out as a small business in the garage of his home, has turned into a flourishing company. Currently there are three stores in two states.

In the eighties, Bussell began the business as more of a hobby in the garage of his home. He started selling guns to be able to purchase guns for his own collection.

Once Bussell saw the interest from members of the community, he decided it was time to expand.

In 1990, Bussell rented a store in the Dogwood Heights area and started serving customers from Kentucky and Virginia, in addition to new and former customers of his hometown. A short time later, Bussell decided he needed to expand again to meet customer demand. Sales were doubling every six months. So, he purchased a building at 1812 North Broad Street in Tazewell, Tenn. The shop still calls this location home. A few more years passed and Bussell again decided he needed to expand, again to meet customers’ needs. This time, he crossed the state line to better serve his Kentucky clients. Five years ago, he opened a store at 222 North 19th Street in Middlesboro. The Middlesboro store was opened originally just to handle transfers, but it now is a complete shop where customers can take care of all of their gun and ammunition needs. The Kentucky store was not the last of expansions Busssell would make. Two years ago, he opened a store in Morristown, Tenn., at 422 North Cumberland Street.

The building Bussell purchased in Morristown contains three shops. He currently rents one of the shops, houses his third gun shop in one and plans to further expand his business in the remaining shop. Bussell plans on using that shop for inventory and to be the hub for his future online sales division. Bussell said he is grateful for his customers, saying they are the main reason he has been able to continue to grow his once small business into the thriving business it is. “Without our customers, we wouldn’t have any sales,” said Bussell.
