PINEVILLE — It was a breezy homecoming night on Friday as Pineville welcomed Paintsville to town. A strong ground attack helped the Mountain Lion outscored the Tigers 26-0 in the second half as they pulled away for a 40-15 win.
Pineville employed a three-headed monster in the backfield as Conner Ford, Tanner Mike and Andrew Douglas accounted for 401 rushing yards and six touchdowns in the win.
“I thought our (offensive) line did a great job of controlling the line of scrimmage and our backs did a great job of running the football,” said Lion coach Bart Elam.
There was no shortage of big runs for the Lions as Mike finsihed with 161 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries, Douglas added 124 yards and three more TDs and Ford added another 116 yards on the ground.
Pineville did lose two fumbles in the game and Paintsville led 15-14 at halftime after getting touchdown runs from quarterback Kash Daniels and running back Prater Helton. Daniels led the Tigers with 78 rushing yards and was 16-of-31 passing in the game.
The Lions took the lead for good with 9:46 to play in the third quarter as Mike scored on a 6-yard run to make it 20-15.
That was still the score going into the fourth quarter, where Pineville simply overwhelmed the Tigers. The momentum shifted after a no-call on an apparent face mask got the Lions and their crowd fired up.
On the very next play, Douglas carried the majority of Paintsville’s team in the end zone on a 24-yard touchdown run. Mike added the two-point conversion and the lead was up to 28-15.
After a fumble by Daniel, the Mountain Lions regained possession. A 36-yard run by Ford put Pineville in Tiger territory. A pass interference call brought Pineville to the 10-yard-line and Mike would run 10 yards on the next play for the score. After a failed two-point conversion, the score was 34-15.
Mike came up with an interception and then put the final nail in Paintsville’s coffin with a 32-yard touchdown run with 1:01 remaining in the game. That set the final score at 40-15.
Next week Pineville (2-3) will travel to Allen Central (0-5). Paintsville (1-4) will play host to Betsy Layne.
